Building pdftk on VPS cannot allocate memory

September 11th, 2007

I found this solution at http://www.schmalenegger.com/virtual-server-compiling-error-cannot-allocate-memory/

Sometimes when you compile certain things on a virtual server from source, you may receive the following error message: “virtual memory exhausted: Cannot allocate memory” error. The following is a quick tip that at least worked for me.

List the amount of virtual memory allowed:

[root@vps /]# ulimit -a

To change it to a smaller value, enter this:

[root@vps /]# ulimit -v 60000

To reset it to the default settings, just type:

[root@vps /]# ulimit -v unlimited

On Debian you want to use ulimit -m instead of ulimit -v. It will do the job for you.

[root@vps /]# ulimit -m 60000

Apfelwein 3

August 17th, 2007

Well I really need to get batch 2 bottled. It’s been ready since I moved in June, so it is nicely bulk aged 🙂

I started batch 3 tonight with an OG of 1.063 and it should yield around 8.7% ABV. Time to soak the bottles for batch 2.

I’m thinking about brewing a batch of hefeweisen tomorrow to keep the pipeline full.

Winexpert Australian Cabernet/Shiraz

August 17th, 2007

Dennis and I started a batch of Winexpert Australian Cabernet/Shiraz on 8/11/07. We pretty much made it according to the directions, but used Wally’s tips for a more full bodied wine. We added 1 tsp grape tannin and water to 1.091 OG. We were trying to be around 1.093, but oh well. After doing some additional research, I’m going to try adding 1lb raisins to my next kit and make it to volume per kit instructions.

Info from the sales slick:
